Fun Things to Do With No Power

You might think a power outage automatically means you’ll be bored out of your mind. But, that doesn’t have to be the case. Actually, not having any power can be a fun experience sometimes, if you’re willing to make the most of it.

So, what can you do for fun while you’re waiting for the power to return? How can you keep yourself and your family entertained during an outage?

Read a Book

When was the last time you had enough free time to sit down and read a book? Now is the perfect time to take a step back, ditch the electronics, and crack open a book you’ve been neglecting for far too long.

Books are great ways to lose a few hours getting lost in something great. Plus, it can be fun to read a book by flashlight, and be transported away into a different world.

Write a Letter

Want to connect with someone? In this world of email and text, handwritten letters might seem like a thing of the past. But, there’s nothing like getting a letter in the mail from someone you care about, so take the time to write out a letter or two by hand and make someone’s day.

Play a Game

Card games, chess, or other board games are great options during a power outage. Again, you can play them using just a flashlight, and there is a unique sense of excitement when you’re doing something like this in the dark. It really changes the whole feel of whatever game you’re playing.

Look at the Stars

If it’s a clear night and the power is out in your neighborhood, it’s the perfect time to do some stargazing. You’ll see everything much clearer since there is less light pollution drowning out the brightness of the stars. Just make sure you stay safe if there are any downed power lines nearby.

Decide On a Fun Recipe to Make

You might not be able to cook, or even open the fridge during a power outage. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t decide on something fun to make when the power comes back on. Dig out old cookbooks or write down a new, made-up recipe with your family members. Try it once the power comes back on to celebrate! It’s a great way to pass the time and bond with your family while you’re waiting.

Purchase a Generator

One way to keep things as normal as possible during a power outage is to have a generator at home. If the power does go out, a generator will kick in and allow you to keep your lights on, keep your appliances running, and live like you usually would. While the suggestions listed above can be fun, and they’re great ways to get through a power outage, if you truly feel as though you can’t deal with an outage, a generator is a great, affordable option to keep things up and running.
